In an excursion around seven sites in Lavender Bay, Lily Hibberd and WART will take you through an allegorical tour of Luna Park. This WALK promises to reveal how joy and sacrifice eclipse histories of madness and exile and underpin the contemporary workings of Australian institutions of confinement.

Mieke Bal and Michelle Williams Gamaker’s new feature film A Long History of Madness will be presented in association with the WALK performances, hosted by Artspace, Sydney. This will be followed by an informal discussion in which issues arising from the film and questions of madness, institutional confinement and representations of history will be discussed. This event aims to engage people with direct experience of institutional confinement, and those working or associated with arts, academic, and community and state mental health and corrections organisations. Drinks to follow screening.

Benevolent Asylum: just for fun is a WALK project. WALK is a season of walks, promenades, marches and strolls in and around Sydney taking Performance Space’s program onto the streets and into the venues of partner organisations, opening up opportunities for artists to engage with new sites and audiences.
