An atmosphere hangs weighted, falling upward toward the floor.
Premonition: At the end of a dream of a cave, a portal... is a practice of inhabiting dances that have already lived. Infesting the crevices of joints, nerve endings, cracks in the floor, and other dark interiors, Newton and Wawn have become hosts to a constellation of growths, memories and emergent archetypes. In a durational performance that cycles between premonitions and their fulfilment, they collaborate with artist Del Lumanta to exorcise these hostings and outlay a dreamscape that resides only at the distant end of a portal.
Over the course of the weekend the two performers sustain a durational solo performance. The barn doors will be open and audiences are welcome to come and go as they please. Each cycle lasts 20 minutes but never repeats. The work is grounded in an improvised performance practice that has grown between Newton and Wawn since they first met in 'the shadow cave' through the Performance Space x AGNSW Lab in 2023. In this practice, dances are always first experienced as a premonition before they are realised physically. This satisfying practice of moving into the dark knowing the shape of things to come, has evolved through intervening residencies supported by AGNSW, Artspace, Critical Path and ReadyMade Works.
Rhiannon and Ivey extend their heartfelt thanks to the artists and peers who have contributed to the development of Premonition: At the end of a dream of a cave, a portal: Alistair Watts, Lizzie Thomson, David Huggins, Niki Verral, Eugene Choi, Jessie French and Katy Green Loughrey.
We hope to see you in the cave.
